About

The AI doesn’t distrust you. It has nothing to say about you.

More customers ask an AI assistant for a recommendation than ever, and on every one of those questions a business is either named or passed over. Digital Cartography measures which of those is happening to you, question by question, and shows you the precise reason, without inventing a number to make the point.

What we do

An AI can only recommend what it can find and understand.

Where you actually lose

Ask an AI about you by nameand it reads your site and describes you well. You don’t lose there. You lose the moment a customer asks for the category without naming you, because to answer that the AI reads only a handful of web pages, and it builds its whole answer out of what those pages happen to say.

So there are two separate ways to lose that question, and they need different fixes. Your name might not be on any page it opened, in which case it cannot name you at all. Or your name is there and the page says nothing about what the customer actually asked for, in which case it read about you and passed over you in favour of a business it could verify. The second one is the quieter failure, and it is the one nobody tells you about.

The two things we check

Everything in your report is one of these two, because between them they decide whether there is anything for an AI to say about you.

Signal 01 · Visibility

Can it find you?

Whether your name appears on the pages an assistant actually opens for your trade and your suburb: the roundups, directories and threads it leans on. We show you which pages those are and which of them are missing you. Many are free to appear on.

Signal 02 · Legibility

Can it understand you?

Whether those pages, and your own website, say in plain words what you offer. A page it opened that never mentions gluten free, or late opening, or a skin fade, cannot get you named on that question. It counts for nothing there.

You need both. Being on a page an AI reads is what makes it possible for it to name you. It has never been enough on its own, and we will not tell you otherwise.

Both signals move with the question

Neither signal is a single fact about you, which is why we will not give you one score for either. The pages an assistant opens change with the question it was asked: a broad ask pulls up roundups and threads, while a specific one, like a dietary need or a particular haircut, pulls up pages that carry that detail instead, and those are often different pages entirely. So you can be easy to find on one question and invisible on the next, and legible on one and silent on the next, at the same time and on the same website.

The assistant matters too. Ask for what is near a particular street and Gemini leans on Google’s map, ranking on distance rather than reputation, which is a different game from the one ChatGPT plays on the same suburb. That is why the scan reports each question on its own and always names the surface it checked, rather than giving you one score.

Clear diagnostic data at every level

Digital Cartography works at two depths. The Free Scan evaluates your domain deterministically, uncovering technical faults and identifying relevant free directories to join. The Paid Scan, which is in testing, goes further: it puts the question to a live web search and reports where you were named, question by question. When an AI opens a page carrying your name but missing the searched filter, we highlight it as a high-impact update opportunity. You receive actionable findings attributed to specific sources.

How we stay honest

  • Every finding names its engine. Assistants index and synthesise different sources, so we attribute each result to the exact platform it came from. You always know where your brand stands, and on which AI.
  • Every claim is grounded in evidence. Findings trace to a live page we can put in front of you, never to a model's memory, which invents businesses that do not exist.
  • We have measured the placebos, so you don't pay for them. Popular advice we tested and found inert does not appear in your report, including the work we would have been paid to perform.

Where we work

Digital Cartography is built in Perth, Western Australia, and tested first in local markets like Claremont and Northbridge. The rules an AI follows differ by category and city, so we measure each one rather than assume it carries over.
